SEPTA R5 Shuttle Buses

For the first time SEPTA will try to run buses with bike racks on substitute bus service this weekend.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (October 29, 2003) – SEPTA will operate shuttle buses
between Thorndale and Paoli Stations on regional rail Route R5 this
Saturday, November 1 due to an Amtrak track project.

SEPTA will try to assign a low-floor bus with a bike rack on substitute bus service tomorrow.
Whitford station will be served by a van shuttle which will not be bike accessible.

Thanks to Brian Vittulli at SEPTA for helping to arrange this.

Shuttle buses will represent R-5 train service between Thorndale and Paoli Stations starting at 8:13 a.m. inbound from Thorndale and 9:00 a.m. outbound from Paoli. This shuttle bus service will remain in effect throughout the remainder of scheduled train service for that day. Trains will continue to operate as far as Malvern. Whitford will be serviced by a small van and will operate between Whitford and Paoli Stations. Inbound shuttle bus riders arriving at Paoli Station will experience delays of up to 15 minutes waiting for the next inbound train and should plan their commute accordingly.

For additional service information, call SEPTA at (215) 580-7800 or visit

Smart Cards for Dummies?

It seems logical that the City of Philadelphia would develop smart cards for parking meters instead of their transit system (e.g., Metrocard). Hmm making it easier to park would encourage more cars to enter the Central Business District, right? A better use for the smart card? Try Copenhagen's Smart Bikes

Thunderhead Alliance Honors Most Courageous in Advocacy

LAS VEGAS, NV - At the Interbike show this past week the Thunderhead Alliance honored those who have shown courage toward greater advocacy efforts. Their 2003 Courage in Advocacy Awards went to 16 winners for their efforts to support effective advocacy at the grassroots level.

Planet Bike earned one of the top awards for their pledge of $50,000 in 2004 to support Thunderhead's new 50/50 Project that will build effective bicycle advocacy organizations in all 50 states and the 50 top population metropolitan areas. Upon receiving the award, Planet Bike CEO Bob Downs
said, "The bike industry must recognize that effective advocacy happens at
the state and local level. As one of the smallest suppliers, we hope our
pledge of $50,000 to 50/50 will set the bar much higher for industry
support to the Thunderhead Alliance."

Velo News was another top winner for making this national coalition the sole beneficiary of their Evening with Graham Watson and Bob Roll event on November 14 at the Metreon in San Francisco. "I had only spoken to their Velo Swap director, Dave Whittingham, once before," said Sue Knaup,
Thunderhead's executive director, "when he called to give me the great
news. Velo News has shown true courage by pledging all proceeds of this fine
event to our 50/50 Project."

Not all winners received their awards for direct support of Thunderhead.
Marianne Fowler, senior vice president of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, received hers for her courage in the recent grassroots fight to save the Transportation Enhancements program. Weeks before the landslide victory
when hope was thin, she flew to Wisconsin for a personal meeting with
Congressman Thomas Petri. As a direct result of this meeting, he introduced the
amendment that resulted in full restoration of this critical program that
brings funding to bicycle and pedestrian projects.

The other three top winners were Breezer for their courage in building
transportation bikes to serve everyday riding, the National Bicycle Dealers
Association
for their partnership efforts with Thunderhead to connect
dealers with Thunderhead member organizations, and the National Center for
Bicycling and Walking
for their ongoing courageous support for Thunderhead.

Other honorees were BTI, Burley Design, Fuji America, Hans Johnsen Co.,
Hawley Co., Interbike, Quality Bicycle Products, USA Cycling, Trek and
Wilson Bicycle Sales.

The Thunderhead Alliance is the only unified coalition of state and local
bicycle advocacy organizations. They operate on the principle that
effective
advocacy must be a coordinated effort at the grassroots level. Their 88
member organizations represent 42 states and one province.

Eyewitness to a Car - Pedestrian Crash

As I was walking to Market East Station from the Bicycle Coalition office around 6pm, I was about to cross Walnut (at Jefferson Hospital and Wendy's) as the light turned green, I looked right and noticed that a car was not slowing down at the intersection, meanwhile a cab started to cross Walnut, What happened next was totally surreal to watch, the car grazed the cab and veered right into a group of pedestrians at Wendy's.

I and at least one other person called 911 a beat cop was there before I finished the phone call. What really disturbed me was that this crash took place right in front of Jefferson Hospital and we waited at least 3-5 minutes for an ambulance to fight traffic. Two Jefferson employees in scrubs told one of the first responders that they were not allowed to provide an immobilizing board for the victims. Ridiculously litigous society we live in.

I don't yet know the fate of the two victim, One other was taken on the board into the first ambulance. the second one was still on the ground after he got up for a couple minutes, probably waiting for the second ambulance. A third person from what I am told jumped out of the way at the last second.

Better roads, better rights, and better rules.
